‘El Salvador Memories’ Pyramid Finds Permanent Home in Wheaton

The Montgomery County Planning Board gave one of Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival’s pyramids a permanent home Thursday.

Entitled El Salvador Memories, the pyramid will be displayed in the lobby of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission headquarters on Reedie Drive in Wheaton.

“We embraced this opportunity, because at Parks, we love art,” declared Miti Figueredo, Montgomery Parks director.

Artists Allyson Sanchez and Edwin Salmeron created the mosaic tile artwork together. Sanchez, who was a senior at Albert Einstein at the time, made sure El Salvadore was depicted accurately and creatively in her design.

Sanchez currently is a senior at Towson University, where she is majoring in digital art and design.

Salmeron, of Silver Spring, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree while employed as a maintenance worker and is co-owner of Whimsy Mosaics. He guided Sanchez and three families as they created the mosaic art by placing the colored glass and tiles onto adhesive swatches.

The pyramid was created in 2020 during the pandemic when the Wheaton Arts Parade and Festival could not be held. Instead, the organization commissioned 13 local artists to paint tetrahedron pyramid sculptures that are on display throughout Wheaton.

El Salvadore Memories has been at on display at VisArts in Rockville, the Sandy Spring Museum, Brookside Gardens and the Wheaton Arts Parade gallery.
